So what are the things to know before visiting Malta?

1. The Noise

Now officially voted the loudest country in Europe. The Maltese motto seems to be “The louder, the better” Do not be alarmed if you hear people are arguing in the streets on the way to church at 5 in the morning, they’re actually just discussing the weather! The island’s noise extends beyond human interactions, with factors such as speeding cars, barking dogs, food truck sirens, excessive honking, early-morning construction activities, and even fireworks as early as 6 in the morning. Even though Gozo, Malta’s smaller sister island, boasts serene and peaceful areas, it, too, is known for contributing to the country’s reputation as one of the loudest in Europe. So if you’re a light sleeper, we insist you bring your earplugs

2. The Humidity

Being a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean, Malta experiences high levels of humidity that can intensify the perception of weather conditions. The hot weather can feel even hotter, and the cold weather can feel colder due to this humid climate. So although a low of 9 degrees in winter sounds mild, the humidity can make it feel so much colder. One aspect affected by the humidity is the construction of houses, which are primarily built to withstand the scorching summer temperatures. As a result, properties can feel damp during the colder months. It is not uncommon for towels and other items to take a considerable amount of time to dry, adding to the overall sense of moisture in the environment. It’s important for visitors to be aware of these factors to ensure their comfort during their stay.

3. The Driving

In Malta, driving is done on the left side of the road, which may require some adjustment for visitors from countries where driving is on the right. However, it’s important to note that the driving culture in Malta can be quite different compared to other places. While road safety laws are in place, enforcement may be lax, leading to a disregard for certain regulations. Drink driving, Speeding cars, frequent lane cutting, a lack of turn signal usage, and occasional incidents of road rage are unfortunately common occurrences on Maltese roads. It’s crucial for visitors to exercise caution, stay alert, and adapt to the local driving style to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while exploring the island.

4. The Dust

As a small Mediterranean island, Malta is essentially a rocky terrain characterized by its abundant use of sandstone. The island’s dusty nature can be attributed to the prevalence of sandstone in construction materials and the surrounding environment. Houses built with stone facades and interiors tend to accumulate dust both inside and outside, with the situation exacerbated during the summer months. Although at Roam we do our upmost to ensure the properties are clean for your arrival, this dustiness can be noticeable within even a few hours. Old farmhouses especially require regular cleaning and maintenance to keep properties looking fresh and inviting. Visitors should be prepared for the potential of dusty conditions and during longer stays take necessary measures to ensure their comfort during their stay.

5. Plug Sockets

In Malta, it’s important to note that the standard plug socket differs from the typical European configuration. Instead of the two-pin Europlug, Malta utilizes the three-pin English plug. This means that visitors from European countries may need an adaptor to charge their devices or use electrical appliances. To assist guests, we have prepared a helpful video guide demonstrating an alternative method to plug in without an adaptor. The video can be accessed through this link.

However, for those who prefer the convenience and peace of mind, we highly recommend bringing an adaptor to ensure compatibility with the local power outlets during their stay.

6. The Bugs

Due to the humid climate in Malta, mosquitoes are commonly found on the islands, particularly during the warmer months. Visitors are advised to be prepared for their presence and take necessary precautions such as using mosquito repellents and keeping windows and doors closed to minimize their entry. Additionally, it’s important to note that cockroaches are also prevalent in the Maltese islands. However, their presence does not imply a lack of cleanliness in properties, as these resilient insects can thrive in various environments. To avoid attracting ants, it is crucial to refrain from leaving food uncovered or unattended in the property. Taking these precautions will help ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable stay while minimizing encounters with these common pests.

7. Public Transport

It’s important for tourists visiting Malta to be aware that the public transport system, particularly the buses, can be unreliable at times. Buses may arrive late, early, or, on rare occasions, not at all. It’s also worth noting that during peak hours or busy periods, buses can become overcrowded to the point where the drivers may not be able to accept any more passengers. While efforts are being made to improve the public transport system, it’s advisable to plan accordingly, allowing extra time for potential delays and considering alternative transportation options when necessary. Exploring the island with a rented car or utilizing taxi services can provide more flexibility and convenience, ensuring a smoother travel experience throughout your stay in Malta.
